Why Are The Domain Rates So Different? What Should I Look Out For?

If you have ever registered a domain and done some research before doing so, you would have wondered as to why domain name registration rates differ so widely across the internet.

Actually, Domain names are registered by companies called Registrars. These are literally like the Registrars we are aware of in real life and maintain a list of domain names as well as register new ones. These Registrars operate through their resellers, who in turn have web sites where you can register your domains. These resellers pay a fixed flat fee per domain name to their registrar, but they have the liberty of charging their clients any rate they wish to.

However, each reseller and each registrar have their understanding, as to what rate the reseller pays the registrar for each domain. An important factor is how many domains the reseller sells, this determines his wholesale price. Thus, virtually every site on the internet has a different rate of registering and transferring domain names.

However, some are worth the extra mullah. Besides registering the domain they provide you with features like domain forwarding, temporary “site under construction” page hosting, control panels, domain-lock facility etc.

Today the cost of domains has fallen drastically. Certain tld (Top level Domains) such as .info sell for as low as a $1! But, whatever may be the price, make sure that the website or company you purchase from is ICANN certified and offers you the following:

1) Control Panel: This is absolutely essential for it allows you to change and control various aspects of your domain such as nameservers, contact details etc.

2) Domain Lock: This facility allows you to a lock your domain to the registrar so nobody can hijack your domain.

3) Managed DNS: This is an advanced but highly useful utility that allows you to modify your MX (mail exchange), A, CNAME and SOA entries. This is useful when you want to have different mail servers than your website or if you want to setup sub-domains etc.

You can get all the above facilities at the Sigel WebSolutions WebStore.
